Items are first sent to the San Francisco Police Department and if unclaimed go the state auction Sacramento, California. Once in Sacramento, they are pooled with the times from Los Angeles and Sacramento to form one of the largest unclaimed auctions in the USA.
San Francisco Airport SFO Storage Facilities
Storage is available at the Airport Travel Agency. Items such as luggage, dog kennels, golf equipment, surf equipment, skis, bicycles and canoes may be stored. Unclaimed items go to auction. Auction San Jose auctions off vehicles that have been impounded by the San Jose Police Department, California Highway Patrol, Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department with about 200 vehicles auctioned off each week. Auction San Jose is a Specialist for Abandoned Property.

San Francisco Police Auctions
Items lost at the airport are directed to the San Francisco Police Department. Found items are held by law in the Property Clerk's Room for 120 days.
If the item is unclaimed after 120 days by the owner or finder, then the item shall be destroyed or sold at public auction.
Auctions are held at PropertyRoom.com. Proceeds from auctions are split 50-50 between propertyroom.com and the city. South San Francisco sends a couple boxes of found items a month to the auction website. http://www.propertyroom.com/
